Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

You've probably noticed that The Sci-Fi Block has undergone some cosmetic adjustments over the last several months. It began when we scrapped our original logo for something ... better, it continued with various minor adjustments popping up almost weekly, and with a ton of help from Classic-Horror.com's Nate Yapp, we've come to where we are today.

"Like" Us on Facebook!

What professional website doesn't have a Facebook page? "The Sci-Fi Block" is no longer a correct answer to that question. That's right, we've joined the twenty-first century and set ourselves up a Facebook page. I'll let that sink in for a minute.

...

...

You okay now? If so, head on over to our page and "like" us. And don't be afraid to comment on our stuff over there. We like it when people talk.

Win a Copy of 'Firefly: Still Flying' from Us!

Titan Books has given The Sci-Fi Block two -- count 'em, 2 -- copies of their new Firefly companion book, Firefly: Still Flying, which features not only behind-the-scenes stories, prop information, character photos, episode storyboard art, and ship concept designs, but also three Firefly short stories (you can read our full review of the book here). The book hits stores Tuesday, May 25, and will likely stand as the definitive Firefly companion.

The Poll Will Return!

You may have noticed an absent green box in the top right corner of the main part of the page. The poll section of the site has been taken down temporarily. Don't fret, though. It's in for some minor maintenance, but it'll be back soon.

Contest: Win DVDs of Roddenberry's 'Genesis II' and 'Planet Earth' Pilots

So, we've got these recently-released DVDs of Gene Roddenberry's rejected TV show pilots, Genesis II and Planet Earth. We usually feed our extra stuff to the Rancor in the basement, but this time we decided to give 'em away.

Here's what to do:

1. Register with us (or else we won't know how to contact you). [Update: You don't have to register anymore. Just do step 3 and make sure you leave your email address.]

The Sci-Fi Block Evolves

If you've been visiting the site regularly, you've probably noticed quite a few changes going on at The Sci-Fi Block. We've spruced things up with some minor visual adjustments, and, more importantly, we've added new kinds of content. It just so happens that a lot of the new stuff landed in a span of two days, from September 15 to 16.

Update and Downtime

Just a heads-up to our readers: The Sci-Fi Block will be undergoing a massive internal update for twenty-four to forty-eight hours starting Monday, August 17. During all or some of that time, the site may be unavailable, but don’t worry, we'll be back as soon as we possibly can.

Happy 10th Anniversary Classic-Horror.com

Today, Classic-Horror.com, a site with which The Sci-Fi Block works very closely, celebrates its tenth year of existence as one of the most insightful and comprehensive sources of horror film exploration and criticism on the web. "Editor in Creep" Nate Yapp tells the Sci-Fi Block, "I still can't quite believe we made it this far."

The Sci-Fi Block's 100th Review

It may be a modest milestone, but we feel it's an important one. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we posted our 100th review this past Friday. How fitting that it turned out to be our mammoth review of Gojira (including an assessment of its American cut, Godzilla: King of the Monsters!).

Thanks to all of our readers who have allowed us to make it this far. Here's to the next hundred, and many more after that.

Godzilla Raids The Sci-Fi Block

The entire month of May this year is going to be devoted to everyone's favorite giant Japanese monster: Godzilla. We're starting off as usual with a Top 10 Countdown encompassing the first two weeks. The countdown will be (you guessed it) "Top 10 Godzilla Films." And that's just the beginning of things. Upon conclusion of the countdown, we will be posting a review of one Godzilla film per weekday for the entire rest of the month.
