Grant Morrison's Instant Classic 'All-Star Superman' to Become an Animated Feature

It wasn't even written that long ago, but Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman is generally acknowledged as one of the best Superman stories ever. Told in a bright, optimistic style and fully exploring not only our love for Superman but Superman's love for us, it captures the essence of who that iconic superhero is and of what makes him special like few other comics have come close to accomplishing. It is the kind of comic that anyone can appreciate. Now it seems that All-Star Superman will no longer be only a comic. It is joining the ranks of DC's line of animated feature films.

iFanboy was the first site to catch Dwayne McDuffie's blog post in which McDuffie announces that the All-Star Superman adaptation is his next project. The film will be released in the spring of 2011. As of now, we don't know exactly what role he will have in the making of the film, but a good guess would be that he's writing the adaptation. McDuffie has a good bit of experience with animated movies and TV shows, and even with video games, most often as a writer but occasionally sitting in the editor or producer's chair. His most recent DC project along these lines was his writing of the script for Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, which in this critic's opinion was the best animated DC movie yet.

We therefore have an apparently competent writer taking on a great comic. I doubt the film version of this story will bring us anything the comic wasn't able to achieve, but it should turn out well, nonetheless, and it may reach a marginally larger audience.

Either way, good luck, Dwayne. You have a lot to live up to.
